Bystander Intervention Training for the Nightlife Community

February 11, 2020 - 2:00pm to 4:00pm

On February 11, 2020, the Mayor’s Office of Nightlife and Culture (DCMONC), the Mayor’s Office of Women Policy and Initiatives (DCMOWPI), and the DC Rape Crisis Center (DCRCC), with partners Uber and NO MORE, will host a Bystander Intervention Training for the nightlife community. The training is designed to help prevent sexual assault as part of the #DontStandBy Bystander Awareness Initiative. As the third city in the US to launch #DontStandBy, Washington DC is stepping up to help empower the entire nightlife community — patrons, staff and rideshare drivers — to play a role in preventing sexual violence before it starts and creating a safer nighttime environment for everyone.

About the Training
The survivor-centered training will be led by sexual violence prevention experts and advocates from the DC Rape Crisis Center, the oldest and first rape crisis center in the US. The training will educate attendees on the warning signs of potentially unsafe situations and provide attendees with safe and positive ways to prevent or intervene in situations that could lead to sexual violence or harassment. Attendees will also receive a certificate upon completion of the training course. Please email dcrcc@dcrcc.org to RSVP today!

About #DONTSTANDBY
DC is the third city in the US to launch the Don’t Stand By Initiative to empower the entire nightlife community — patrons, nightlife staff, and rideshare drivers — with information and tools to help prevent sexual assaults before they happen. Last year, billboards and posters were posted in and around restaurants and bars in Washington DC, along with messaging distributed via social media channels. Uber is also making bystander awareness information available to all drivers in the Washington DC area and nationally. This will go hand and hand with this training for local bar/restaurant staff. The end goal — to help ensure respect, safety, and fun are all a part of going out — from the club door to the car door to the front door.
