Statement in Response to the Mayor's Announcement in Support of the Repeal of Initiative 82
The Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington thanks Mayor Bowser for standing with restaurant operators, workers, and diners by supporting the repeal of Initiative 82. Her leadership reflects a clear understanding of the urgent and present challenges our industry is facing and the immediate action required to preserve it.
Let us be clear — repealing Initiative 82 is about saving jobs, saving restaurants, and stabilizing a vital sector of the District’s economy. Restaurants are cornerstones of our communities.
Yet nearly 70% of them have already been forced to cut hours and lay off staff. In 2024 alone, the city saw a record 74 closures. The consequences of inaction are not hypothetical — they’re happening now.
We urge the DC Council to join us and support the repeal of Initiative 82. The industry is at a breaking point. Immediate relief is needed. The time to lead is now.
RAMW Statement regarding ICE Activity in DC
The Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington (RAMW) is deeply concerned by reports of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activities, including reported raids and drop-ins, at dining establishments across the District of Columbia.
Immigrants make up a significant portion of our workforce at all levels. From dishwashers to executive chefs to restaurant owners, immigrants are irreplaceable contributors to our most celebrated restaurants and beloved neighborhood establishments. The immigrant workforce has been essential to sustaining and growing our local restaurant industry and has been a major contributor to our local economy.
The metropolitan Washington area's restaurant industry employs over 60,000 people and generates billions in annual revenue. At a time when our economy is already fragile, losing even one staff member at a single establishment has a profound impact on the operations of a restaurant and its ability to serve patrons. Disrupting restaurant staffing across the industry can create a damaging ripple effect felt immediately throughout the entire local economy.
