In 2020, the first $137,700 of wages or self-employed income are subject to a 12.4% Social Security tax. The IRS has issued Notice 2020-65 to provide guidance on President Trump’s memorandum deferring the employee’s portion of Social Security taxes normally withheld from gross wages. The summary of the guidance is as follows: The term “Affected Taxpayers” means the employer who is otherwise required to withhold the Social Security tax.
