Announcing the Winner of the 2018 K-FOOD Chef Contest, Chef Angel Baretto of The Source

The 2018 K-Food Chef Contest was held at Isabella Eatery at Tysons Galleria on Sunday, August 12th, 2018, from 3-6pm. The purpose of this contest was to highlight the increasing global popularity of Korean food and how chefs have innovated to make Korean ingredients an integral part of the American Culinary Landscape! Our talented group of chefs displayed their culinary expertise in creating their own version of Bibimbap. While each chef created an innovative and creative rendition of this classic dish. There was only ONE winner! A huge congratulations to Chef Angel Baretto from The Source by Wolfgang Puck. He’s going to Korea!! His version had the traditional look and feel but was made in a different way with a burst of flavors and creativity, he also accompanied it with a light broth of mung bean soup . Bibimbap is a rice-based dish combined with vegetables and meat often topped with a fried egg served with a spicy mixing sauce made with “gochujang”. We had a talented group of chefs lined up who competed in the contest; Chef Angel Barreto from The Source by Wolfgang Puck, Chef Jesse Miller from Bar Pilar, Chef Danni McGhee from DAM Good Vegan, and Chef Ellen Lee from the Daikaya Group. Our judges were Chef Mike Isabella of Mike Isabella Concepts, Chef Scott Drewno of CHIKO and Ms. Sery Kim, journalist for Food-and-Travel. With 100 guests enjoying Korean food and wine were able to get a small taste of the bibimbap created by the chefs. Fun and delicious afternoon treats for all! This year, an extraordinary group of culinary experts will judge the contest; Mike Isabella of Mike Isabella Concepts, Sery Kim, a well-known Food-and Travel Journalist, and Scott Drewno, 2017 winner and chef/owner of CHIKO Restaurant. This event was sponsored by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, the Korean Food Promotion Institute, the Ministry of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea. Our partners included the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington (RAWM), Isabella Eatery, Lotte Super Market, and Gimga Design Group.
