CORE Announces Grant to Help Families of Restaurant Employees with support from Capital One

Effort will aid Washington D.C. area restaurant families diagnosed with COVID-19

FRANKLIN, TN, June 24, 2020 – Capital One today announced a $25,000 grant to CORE: Children of Restaurant Employees in support of restaurant employees with children in Washington D.C., Northern Virginia, and the Southern Maryland area.  CORE, a national non-profit organization, provides financial relief to food and beverage employees when either the parent or child faces a health crisis, injury, death, or natural disaster. 

Grants CORE provides to such employees in their time of need are meant to cover basic expenses such as medical costs, rent, utilities, food, and transportation. These families are among the most vulnerable of the millions of restaurant employees across the country, as in many cases, they face the dual impacts of a health crisis and the sudden closure of their workplace in March as part of the response to COVID-19 pandemic.

Barry Gutin, a CORE Board Member and co-owner of Cuba Libre Restaurant & Rum Bar in Penn Quarter said, “I’ve seen firsthand the impact that CORE’s grants have on restaurant families in need. CORE and Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington have partnered to identify restaurant families in greatest need in the Washington D.C, Northern Virginia and Southern Maryland area. The two organizations will work together to promote CORE’s services to the 64,000 food and beverage employees in the Washington area.
