2015 Smithsonian Folklife Festival Presents Peru: Pachamama
The annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival is an incredible opportunity each year to see and interact with practitioners of authentic, living traditions. This year, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival presents Peru: Pachamama.
The goal of the Festival is to strengthen and preserve traditions by presenting them on the National Mall. Tradition-bearers and the public can connect with and learn from one another and, in a respectful way, begin to understand cultural differences and similarities. The Smithsonian Folklife Festival is held outdoors on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., during the last week of June and first week of July. From June 24th through June 28th, and July 1st through July 5th, attendees can view and partake in a full schedule of events including demonstrations, performances, and more to experience a diverse and vibrant culture. Festival hours are 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with special events taking place most evenings beginning at 7 p.m.
The Folklife Festival Marketplace, featuring items made with masterful skill and creativity, will also be open June 24 through July 12, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. It is located in the Potomac Atrium at the National Museum of the American Indian. Purchases help support artists and artisan groups around the world, a key goal of the Folklife Festival.
The Festival is taking place between Third and Fourth streets, just north of the National Museum of the American Indian. There is no admission charge. Visitors should dress for hot and humid weather. Parking around the Mall is extremely limited, so visitors are advised to use public transportation. Federal Center is the closest Metro station to the new Festival site. L’Enfant Plaza and National Archives stations are within a half-mile. For general Smithsonian visitor information, call (202) 633-1000.
