Passion Food Hospitality Takes its Sixth Venture to the West End – Washington Circle

PassionFood Hospitality has secured the first sidewalk-front restaurant on Washington Circle, the future location of the sixth establishment – sixth and seventh, to be exact – in association with and operated by therestaurant group whose concepts initially ventured to select corners inthe heart of downtown Washington, DC. Chef Jeff Tunks, along with partners Gus DiMillo and David Wizenberg, have made it their mission to source premier products predominantly sustainable, global seafood. They have been impressing the Washington dining scene since their launch of DC Coast almost thirteen years ago.

In the bustling West End, in the heart of Washington’s Foggy Bottom, District Commons will open in 2011, a vibrant central addition to a neighborhood that includes the George Washington University and its hospital, the IFC, the Kennedy Center, a busy Metro stop, the west K Street business corridor, and plenty of local residents.  In an innovative and diversifying development, Burger, Tap & Shake will share the kitchen, providing top-quality counter service to the high volume of walk-by traffic on 23rd Street.

District Commons promises to be “big, brassy, and teeming with life” – with Jeff Tunks’ modern American menu matching its vitality.  His chef-driven, market-based, seasonal cuisine will feature modern interpretations of time-honored American classics, as well as an array of dishes celebrating the more worldly influences on our national cuisine.  It will be supported by a dynamic raw bar at one end of his display kitchen, and an open hearth oven for freshly baked flatbreads and savory tarts anchoring the other.

Burger, Tap & Shake, a practically self-explanatorysecond operation within the new space, will have a limited menu and a more casual, industrial vibewith counter service and café seating inside and on the sidewalk facing Washington Circle, as well.  Its exceptional quality will significantly raise the bar in the local ‘burger wars,’ as Tunks is specifying top-grade beef ground fresh in-house, hand cut double-fried French fries, homemade buns and pickles, and ‘grown-up’ milkshakes.  The two establishments will share a beer program featuring 20 American small batch beers on tap.

Hungry yet?  Hang in there: the lease has been signed, and this award-winning team’s sure-fire double-hitter will open next year on Washington Circle.
