Cultural Tourism DCand partners observe the 150th anniversary of DC Emancipation Day with a newmobile scavenger hunt, Free in DC: Celebrating 150 Years of Emancipation. Thislocation-based trivia game explores Emancipation and Civil War history across thecity. The smartphone based game is presented with Ford’s Theatre, PresidentLincoln’s Cottage, and the Willard InterContinental Washington hotel.
 
This year will markthe 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s act freeing all enslaved people inthe District of Columbia. DC Emancipation took place a full nine months beforePresident Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation freed enslaved people in the rebelliousstates.
 
The Free in DCcompetitive scavenger hunt, held on DC Emancipation Day, April 16, takescontestants to 11 sites around the city where they must complete challenges torack up points for a chance to win prizes
 
Three hunt challenges will relate tothe Willard’s historic Washington DC legacy. The 30 competitors with the highest scores by the end of April 16 willreceive gift bags courtesy of President Lincoln’s Cottage and be entered into adrawing for the grand prize: a two-night stay at the Willard InterContinentalWashington. Winner of the grand prize must be at least 18 years of age. Thecitywide hunt will take most participants four hours to complete. 
 
Free in DC:Celebrating 150 Years of Emancipation is available through SCVNGR, a freemobile gaming application available for download on iPhone and Androidsmartphone devices. Participation is free and open to all DC residents andvisitors. Participants should download the SCVNGR app in advance. Completedownloading instructions are available at www.CulturalTourismDC.org.
