In 2020, the first $137,700 of wages or self-employed income are subject to a 12.4% Social Security tax. The Social Security tax gets split by the employer and employee on wage earnings while the self-employed earner is liable for the full 12.4% Social Security tax. Aronson Guidance: Payroll Tax Deferral

The IRS has issued Notice 2020-65 to provide guidance on President Trump’s memorandum deferring the employee’s portion of Social Security taxes normally withheld from gross wages. The summary of the guidance is as follows: The term “Affected Taxpayers” means the employer who is otherwise required to withhold the Social Security tax. The week of August 10, 2020, ABRA issued an emergency rulemaking providing additional relief for restaurants. The Board has greatly extended the time for payment, waived late fees and extended the date by which an operator must decide to pay to maintain the license.
